Sporting stars shine on our big awards evening

IT PROVED to be a memorable evening last Monday as the fifth Reporter Series Sports Awards were staged.

More than 300 people packed Dewsbury Town Hall for the glittering evening with awards presented in 11 categories.

The ceremony was hosted by BBC Look North’s Harry Gration who said it was great to be able to take part in such a special evening.

Harry interviewed our judge, Yorkshire County Cricket Club captain Andrew Gale who then helped to hand out the awards.

Andrew interrupted his birthday celebrations on Monday but said he was delighted to attend, adding: “It’s more important to be here and see some of the stars of the future.”

Earlier Reporter Series editor Hannah Ridgeway welcomed the invited guests, sponsors, nominees and their supporters and expressed thanks to the staff at the town hall before MC and comedian Pete Emmett entertained the crowd and interviewed Dewsbury boxing star Gary Sykes.

Former British super-featherweight champion Gary said he was proud to represent the area and grateful to everyone for all the support he has received, adding that he is determined to regain his title.
