Spen duo fly flag in Priestley Cup

East Bierley overcame local rivals Gomersal in last Sunday’s second round to reach the last eight.

Former Bierley batsman Richard Gould led the way for the second division leaders with 57 but they were bowled out for 156 as Kez Ahmed (4-26) and Robert Warriner (4-75) did the damage.

Bierley eased to a six-wicket win with Gavin Hamilton (45) top scoring.

Woodlands completed a quickfire double over Pudsey St Lawrence at Tofts Road, with a five-wicket win in the cup to match the previous day’s league win at Albert Terrace.

Stephen Piercey (3-14) and Pieter Swanepoel (3-31) combined to help dismiss Lawrence for just 91 and Woodlands eased into the last eight with 20 overs to spare as Chris Brice made 28 not out.

Hartshead Moor’s Graham Hilton made an impressive 82 but they were restricted to 176-6 and Division One Pudsey Congs completed a 10-wicket win with Nick Lindley making 105 not out, supported by Gareth Phillips (64no).

Spen Victoria bowed out to second division high fliers Yeadon.

George Deegan made 50 but Spen were dismissed for 154 and Yeadon went on to complete a four-wicket success.

Woodlands are the only local second team remaining in the Priestley Shield after last Sunday’s second round.

Although Arron Brook made 73 for Farsley, they were restricted to 171 all out as Adam Wood claimed 3-24.

Liam Brearley (57), Christian Jackson (35no) and Adam Goldthorpe (32) shone in reply as Woodlands won by six wickets.

Hanging Heaton required little more than 40 overs to defeat Spen Victoria.

Chris Lawson (4-18) and Jacob Lacey (4-20) combined to help dismiss Spen for 76 in 28.3 overs before Lawson (26) and Michael Smith (29no) helped Heaton to victory in 11.5 overs.

East Bierley were edged out by one-wicket against Morley in a game which had a dramatic conclusion.

Bierley were bowled out for 143 and appeared to be heading for an emphatic defeat after Richard Winn (52) and David Dowse (39) produced an 86-run opening stand.

However, Bierley bounced back in style as Jon Glover (4-32) and Andrew Newby (3-4) impressed and Morley slipped from 107-2 to 141-9.

As the tension mounted four wides were bowled as Bierley were edged out.

Lightcliffe made an impressive 250-9 against Hartshead Moor, despite Miles Brooke claiming 6-56.

Mick Baldwin top-scored with 32 in reply, but Hartshead were bowled out for 132.
