Spen athletes move up to second in league table

Spenborough Athletics Club’s women put in good performances in the combined men and women’s Northern Senior League Division Three meet at Bury on Saturday.

Chelsea Mitchell won the hammer throw and came second in the javelin and shot put.

Chelsea was supported by Linda North who won the B hammer and shot put and came second in the discus throw.

Team manager Emma Rawnsley got the women off to a good start on the track coming second in the 400 metres hurdles and later finishing second in the 200 metres. Rosa McKie won the B 400m hurdles and the high jump.

There was a busy afternoon for Glenn Aspindle who began his day with a second place in the pole vault and followed that with wins in the 400m hurdles and the javelin and a second place in the high jump.

Spenborough’s European Veteran 800 metre champion Keith McGhie showed his versatility winning the B 400m hurdles and coming third in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Spenborough finished third of the six teams behind Trafford and Stockport and have moved to second in the league after two matches.

The next match is back at Bury on July 12.
