Heaton must have feared the worst at tea after they were restricted to 117-9 by newly promoted Morley, who had Chris Rodwell in fine form taking 3-7.

Heaton’s close signing from Wrenthorpe, Gary Fellows, top scored with 29 for the Bennett Lane men but it was Busfield who went on to steal the show.

The former Hanging Heaton junior, who has returned following spells at Birstall and New Farnley, returned excellent figures of 6-30 to help dismiss Morley for just 63.

Mark Lawson’s leg spin yielded 3-16 as Heaton picked up 15 points from their opening day win.

There were also victories for champions Woodlands and Cleckheaton but East Bierley slipped to a one-run defeat at home to Pudsey Congs.

Although Luke Jarvis picked up 4-31 for Bierley, Congs reached 183-9, thanks largely to a top score of 40 by Northamptonshire all-rounder James Middlebrook.

Andrew Rennison (48) and Mark Gill (38) hit useful runs in Bierley’s reply but Glenn Roberts kept them in check by claiming 7-38.

Bierley needed 12 to win from the last over with two wickets in hand and in a dramatic finale, needed a six off Eddie Walmsley’s final ball.

Neil Gill found the boundary but it was for a four as Congs had won.

Sam Frankland hit an opening day ton for Woodlands as they beat Saltaire by 98 runs.

Cleckheaton opened with a comfortable six-wicket win at newly-promoted Baildon.
