Simpsons eye title

The Simpsons look set to win a record-equalling seventh consecutive Dewsbury Table Tennis League title.

The record was set by Headfield in the 1970s and The Simpsons need just a point from their final two games to win the title and equal that feat

They were made to pull out all the stops to win their latest match 6-4 at fourth-placed Battyeford.

Richard Lightowler was in fine form winning all his three games, and he teamed up with Jonathan Greaves to win the crucial doubles. Battyeford’s Nicky Flynn and Paul Kirby both won two matches.

The battle for second place is close with four teams still in with a chance. Aardvarks B, Aardvarks A, Battyeford and the Cuckoos all have games left so it is set to go down to the wire.

Third-placed Aardvarks A look the favourites as they still have three matches to play and they won last time out 7-3 against the Terriers. Ian Forthergill and Xiaofei Dyson won all their three games, and also teamed up to win the doubles.

Colts A team are in good form and won 6-4 against second-placed Aardvarks B. Josh Lane and Lewis Williamson won two games each and they also won the doubles game. Chris Reece recorded a victory.

The Aardvarks’ wins came from Kevin Plowman (three) and the wheelchair player is in sparkling form. Freddie Osenton-Brown bagged the other success.

n Dewsbury’s A team moved top of National Cadet League Division One with an emphatic win over the previously unbeaten Keighley.

Having lost 5-4 earlier in the season, Dewsbury gained revenge with a thrilling 6-3 success as Josh Lane impressed winning his three games.

Dewsbury also had wins against Rotherham 9-0 and Sheffield 8-1. Lane won nine out of nine, and was supported by West Yorkshire Schoolboys Under-11 champion Freddie Osenton-Brown and Shayan Sirat, who also gave fine individual performances, both winning seven games.

Dewsbury B stay top of Division Three after wins over Bradford 8-1, Ilkley 8-1, and their closest rivals Doncaster 5-4. Sam Gatenby and Jack Dyson led the way with eight wins out of nine, supported by Kevin Dyson with five wins.
