Sharks make winning start to Conference campaign

Shaw Cross Sharks made a winning start to Joe Chandler’s reign as coach, beating Eastmoor 34-16 in National Conference Division Two.

Five tries in the opening 33 minutes saw the Sharks open a 28-6 lead and they held off a second half fightback by Eastmoor.

Under-18s winger Thomas Ripley scored the first try after Glynn and man-of-the- match Andrew Fawkes combined well, with Shaun Squires converted.

Matthew Collett raced down the right to score and Thomas Stuckey then scooped up a loose ball and ran 20 metres for a try which Squires converted.

Chris Walker intercepted from his own 10-metre line and raced up the touchline before crossing between the posts and Squires’ goal made it 22-0.

Eastmoor talisman Richard Colley was outstanding throughout and got a deserved try but Glynn weaved his way over for a try and Squires added his fourth conversion, leaving it 28-6 at half-time.

Eastmoor battled back after the break as Colley grabbed his second and Mawere then reduced the deficit further but the Sharks defence weathered the storm.

They sealed victory when Glynn crashed over for his second and Squires converted.

n Dewsbury Celtic suffered an opening day 28-12 defeat at home to Millom in Division One.

Niki Crabtree helped himself to a try and two conversions, while Pat Foulstone also touched down in the first period but that was as good as it got for the home side.

The Cumbrian visitors led 14-12 at half-time after tries from Ricky Donahgue, Paul Evans and Anthony Dixon.

Man-of-the-match Marcus O’Brien scored a second half brace and Gareth Heasley completed the try scoring, with Millom goals came from Evans and Ross Brooks to make it a happy long journey home.
