Sharks edge final thriller

SHAW Cross Sharks edged out Dewsbury Celtic 19-18 in a thrilling John Kane Cup final at Batley Bulldogs on Wednesday evening.

Cross took the lead, playing down the slope, when Dave Hudson crossed for a try which Alex Whittaker converted but although Adam Masson scored a second unconverted try, it was Celtic who led 12-10 at the break, with Tom Perks among their scorers.

Paul Adams edged the Sharks back in front with a try in the corner before scrum-half Andrew Tillotson slotted over a vital drop-goal.

Tom Stuckey extended the Cross lead with another try wide out but Celtic refused to give in and replied with a late converted try to set up a grandstand finish.

Cross had prop Tere Ioiane in outstanding form and the Sharks defence repelled late Celtic pressure to hold on and lift the cup.
