Sedge show improvement ahead of FA Vase trip

The Clayborners were poor in last Saturday’s Northern Counties East League Premier Division clash when they went down 3-1 at home to Glasshoughton Welfare but were much improved on Tuesday to bounce back in style and record a 2-0 victory over Winterton Rangers.

Sedge now head to Durham aiming to make Vase progress against a side who play in Division Two of the Northern League.

Liversedge, by their own admission, were poor against Glasshoughton and fell behind after just two minutes when former player Kieran Corley volleyed home.

Callum Ward doubled Glasshoughton’s advantage before half-time and added a third after 64 minutes to ensure the visitors would be leaving with the three points.

Substitute Ben Johnson was lively after coming on to replace Adam Jarrett after 63 minutes and he managed to pull a consolation goal back late on.

Manager Eric Gilchrist was far from pleased and made several changes for Tuesday’s game against Winterton.

They produced some much better attacking football and were the livelier side for long periods.

Sedge took a 15th minute lead when Brook Newton took play to the corner and sent over a teasing cross.

Defender Robbie Spence appeared to get the last touch, sending the ball past his own goalkeeper, but Newton was credited with the goal and Liversedge deservedly held the lead at half-time.

Liversedge also looked more solid at the back as they kept only their second clean sheet of the season.

Sedge wrapped up a second league win late in the game with Johnson’s second goal in as many matches.

Johnson challenged the Winterton goalkeeper, who panicked and allowed the ball to roll past him and Johnson had the simple task of dribbling it into the net.

Following Saturday’s trip to Esh Winning, Liversedge are back in NCE Premier Division action next Tuesday when they welcome local rivals Brighouse Town to Clayborn (ko 7.45pm).

Brighouse’s league campaign has been somewhat disjointed due to their FA Cup involvement and an abandoned game at Glasshoughton and they have taken nine points from four games.
