Scholes lead Division Two – Hashmi hits half century

SCHOLES remain a point clear at the top of Central Yorkshire League Division Two after they recorded a resounding 174-run victory over Townville A last Saturday.

Dan Clifton led the way for Scholes, making 89 in an innings that included seven fours and five sixes, while David Massey cracked 68 not out from 73 balls as Scholes closed on 242-9, of which James Glynn picked up 5-64 for the visitors.

Townville could only field nine men and although opener Danny Murray top scored with 32, they were dismissed for just 68 in the 21st over as Richard West (4-25), Joe Duffy (2-22) and Andrew Corrihan (1-19) combined to earn Scholes all six points.

Batley A recorded a terrific 49 run success over promotion hopefuls Hopton Mills.

New signing Haseeb Hashmi struck a top score of 50 not out, including seven fours and two sixes, after joining from Savile Stars and he was supported by Saqib Talib (31) and Nohman Hussain (33) as Batley reached 221-8 from their 50 overs.

Philip Stott (4-33) was the pick of the Mills bowling but although Paul Moorhouse top scored with 45 in reply, Hopton were bowled out for 172 as they slipped to sixth place.

Roheil Hussain, Talib, Altaf Hussain and Abdur Mamaniat claimed two wickets apiece as Batley moved 13 points clear of the relegation zone.

Birstall A slipped to a narrow two-wicket defeat against Wrenthorpe A.

James Holroyd hit 34 as Birstall were bowled out for 137, with Ian Tennant returning impressive figures of 3-15 from eight overs.

Barry McCormack struck 26 at the top of the Wrenthorpe innings but when he fell, a succession of wickets tumbled with Alex Drake (3-18), Taj Adil (3-41) and Sean Twohig (2-19) impressing.

However, Wrenthorpe stumbled over the finish line, ending 139-8 as they moved above Birstall into third place.
