Two clubs sanctioned after incidents in games with Thornhill Trojans and Dewsbury Moor Maroons

Following incidents in recent games involving Dewsbury Moor Maroons and Thornhill Trojans their opponents have been sanction by the Rugby Football League.

The RFL has taken the decision to suspend rugby league activity involving open age, youth and junior teams at the East Leeds and Moldgreen clubs until the weekend of June 6/7.

This suspension does not apply to Primary Rugby League age groups who are allowed to continue playing.

The incidents involved “unacceptable behaviour”, which including abandoned fixtures and abuse directed towards match officials.

Two community clubs have been sanctioned by the RFL following incidents in games this month.

Both clubs have engaged in meetings with the RFL constructively and have committed to implementing measures aimed at improving behaviour standards, strengthening matchday management processes and reinforcing respect towards match officials and volunteers across all sections of the club.

The sanctions follow two separate matches played on Saturday, May 16 in the National League.

Moldgreen’s game against Thornhill Trojans was abandoned in the second half when the scores were level at 14-14 due to crowd trouble when supporters entered the field of play and are alleged to have assaulted a Trojans player.

Moldgreen deny this claim, but the referee took action in taking the players off the field then abandoning the match.

In East Leeds’ National Division One game against Dewsbury Moor Maroons they had three players sent-off.

After announcing their action the RFL said that it continues to work closely with clubs across the community game to reinforce standards of behaviour, protect participants and volunteers and ensure rugby league remains a safe, respectful and enjoyable environment for all involved.

There were no games in the National Conference last weekend, but in the Yorkshire Men’s League Trophy Dewsbury Celtic’s A team lost 54-14 at Queensbury.

In Division One Birstall Victoria went down 50-16 at Sharlston Rovers as Robbie Belchamber, man of the match Joshua Beevers and Braden Hunter crossed for tries and Oliver Tomlinson kicked two conversions.

Batley ARLFC lost 42-18 away to Stanningley in Division Four.
