Trojans turn on the style to seal impressive away win

Thornhill Trojans turned on the style in the second half to record a fantastic 52-24 win away to Skirlaugh which leaves them two points clear at the top of National Conference League Division One.

Despite taking a 20-0 lead, the Trojans capitulated in the run up to half-time and trailed by four points at the break.

The game had a delayed kick off as on arrival in Hull the Trojans had the embarrassing situation of realising they had left their boot bin in Thornhill.

Assistant coach Scott Dyson had to undertake an emergency shopping trip in Hull to bulk buy boots for the team.

The new boots seemed to inspire the Trojans, who racked up a 20-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes.

Man-of-the-match Danny Ratcliffe scored in the first minute. An off load from Casey Johnson set up the attack before a kick to the in goal area bounced perfectly for Ratcliffe to pounce and score.

Thornhill continued to apply the early pressure and forced Skirlaugh to spill the ball.

Joel Gibson sent out a wonderful pass which found Jake Wilson and strode through to score. Gibson converted.

Thornhill were gifted possession by a knock on and the ball was worked out to Ryan Fenton on the wing and he raced over for a glorious try out wide.

The forward momentum was maintained with Zach Johnson powering over from close range and Gibson converted.

Trailing by 20 points Skirlaugh began to claw their way back into the game as full-back Nathan Slater forced his way over for a try which Carl Puckering converted.

Slater again broke from acting half back to grab his second try which Puckering converted.

Another long range try followed when winger Mike Johnson sprinted from halfway to score. Puckering converted.

On the stroke of half-time Slater pounced on a kick to complete his hat-trick despite Trojans claims for offside.

Puckering converted and Skirlaugh had turned the game round to lead 24-20.

Thornhill came out for the second half and scored 22 unanswered points.

Skirlaugh made a mess of collecting Gibson’s high kick to the in goal area and Danny Ratcliffe picked up the ball to score, with Gibson converting.

Ratcliffe found Wilson who then put Fenton on a run down the wing before the ball was worked inside for Andrew Lambert to score. Gibson converted.

Zach Johnson ran the ball in and with the defence committed, he sent out a pass which put George Woodcock over for a try.

Gibson put up another high kick and the ball bounced awkwardly for Fenton to pounce. He was subjected to a late challenge from a Skirlaugh player, which resulted in scrum half being Reece Dean sin-binned and Thornhill were awarded the try, which Woodcock converted before adding the extra penalty.

Danny Ratcliffe broke down the wing and unselfishly passed inside to allow Fenton to score his third try. Gibson converted.

In the final attack Sam Ratcliffe was caught high by Kane Larvin, which saw the Skirlaugh player sin binned before celebrated a fine away win.
