Thunder will provide Rams A cup challenge

Dewsbury Rams coach Glenn Morrison is expecting a tough test when his side meet Newcastle Thunder in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Although Newcatsle have yet to begin their League One programme, they have progressed to the iPro Sports Cup semi-finals under the guidance of coach Stanley Gene.

Morrison may look to bring a couple of Reserve team players into the side but in conscious that Newcastle will be aiming to cause an upset.

Morrison said: “I was hoping to rotate the squad and give a few youngsters a run but we are facing a very strong Newcastle side.

“They have got some international players in their squad. Stan (Gene) has called in a few favours and he is a good coach.

“It will be tough but we have to show the same professional approach at the weekend as we did on Wednesday.”

Gene has called on the services of fellow Papua New Guineans Jason Tali, Mark Mexico and Charlie Wabo to lead his side.

The Rams recorded a first away win of the Kingstone Press Championship season, overcoming Workington Town 31-18 in midweek and Sunday’s cup clash will be Dewsbury’s third match in eight days.

Luke Adamson bagged a brace of tries and brother Toby grabbed his first try since joining the club as the Rams earned a very satisfactory win which saw them move fifth in the table.

Morrison added: “Several of the boys have been performing well in the Reserves, including both Delaney boys (Brad and James), Joe McLocklan and Callan Beckett and one or two could be given a chance.”

Beckett grabbed a hat-trick in the Reserves last outing as they went down 48-30 to a strong Leigh Centurions Reserves side.
