Thornhill triumph over Moor to lift Boddington’s Trophy

THORNHILL emerged triumphant in a classic Boddington’s Trophy final at a packed Heckmondwike Road, last Sunday.

Moor showed character to fight back from 30-16 down to level the scores with eight minutes to play.

In the final three minutes a Moor pass went astray and Thornhill burst into the Moor half Scott Green picked up from a scrum and dived over for the winning try which was converted by Darren Robinson.

Danny Wardman opened the scoring for Moor, his effort converted by Scott Dyson. There were some classic forward duels involving Wayne Wilson, Chris Mortimer and Andy Burland against Joe Naidole, Scott Woodcok and Ben Kendall.

Thornhill appeared to have taken the game by the scruff of the neck with three tries. Liam Morley chipped for Green for their opener, Scott Woodcock set up Leon James to score on the left before Anthony Harris crossed between the posts. Robinson converted all three.

A promising move involving Bartley O’Brian. Robert Senior, Phil Shotton and winger James McGuire was halted before the ball was slipped out to Peter Robinson to score, Andrew Robinson converted to make it 18-12 at half-time.

Moor’s Jake Richardson, Mortimer, Wilson and Rob Senior kept the pressure on and Scott Dyson dummied his former teamamtes to score. Andrew Robinson’s touchline goal brought Moor to within two points.

Darren Robinson and substitute Jack Stead scored converted tries to extend the Trojans lead to 30-16.

Winger James McGuire then led the Moor fightback scoring an opportunist try .

Moor pressed with Steve McNamara, Dominic Scanlon and Bartley O’Brian denied by strong tackling from Dale Brook, Simon Nelson and Scott Woodcock.

Peter Robinson beat the defence and score between the posts. Andrew Robinson converted to bring the score back to 30-26.

Moor’s Andy Burland and Thornhill’s Darren Robinson were sin-binned as tempers frayed.

Danny Wardman broke, backed by Wayne Wilson and Ryan Smith forced himslef over to level the scores. A difficult conversion attempt was missed.

In a tense finale, each side had their chances but it was Thornhill who won the game with Scott Green’s try, converted by Darren Robinson.

n St Joseph’s beat Batley Boys 32-24 in Saturday’s third/fourth place play-off.

Batley scored first when Mick Redfern’s kick put Adam Bingham over but Saints’ hooker Jay Senior replied and Kristian Burns converted.

Jordan Williams gave St Joseph’s a 12-6 half-time lead the lead with a try.

Matthew Sheridan, Kevin Hall and Mark Kitchingman pressed but Shaun Mitchell intercepted a pass for a converted try.

Adam Bingham, Jonny Mack, Steve Cooper and Richard Moody responded with good runs but Joseph’s extended their lead through Jay Senior.

Batley refused to give in and Bingham broke to send Eddie Mack between the posts, Bingham converted .

St Joseph’s replied with tries by Jason Ryder and Jay Senior to lead 28-12.

Batley replied when Joss Whitehead, Tom Greenwood, Eddie Mack and Steve Cooper linked for Jonny Mack to score but Steve O Keefe struck with another Saints try.

Batley never gave up and Joss Whitehead scored a final try and Jonny Mack converted.
