It has been a number of years since the Rams ran a second string but having opted not to use the dual registration system in 2015, Dewsbury felt having a reserve side would be beneficial to the squad.

Rams chairman Mark Sawyer said: “We have received reassurances from the RFL that a reserve competition would be worthwhile for us.

“The re-establishment of a reserve team will assist with the long-term development of the club’s younger players.

“It will also provide a practical exit route for young amateur players from the local area who are seeking a path in to the professional game.”

It is anticipated the Reserve competition will start in late March or early April, with Dewsbury expected to announce a number of second team friendly fixtures in due course.

Schofield will still be available to play for the Rams, if required, while undertaking the Reserve team coaching role.

Injuries and work commitments limited the 24-year-old to just one appearance last season but he assisted Glenn Morrison and the Rams coaching team, while scouring the local amateur game for emerging talent.

Morrison believes that Schofield has a bright future in coaching, saying: “Since I’ve coached Jonathan he’s not had much luck with injuries. He only ended up playing one game all last season and didn’t even play in a friendly but he’s had a positive attitude throughout all of that and probably has the best football brain at the club.”

Dewsbury Rams season ticket holders will be entitled to free entry to all of the reserves’ home games next season.
