Rams unite in tribute to ‘wonderful’ Danny

The Keighley Cougars half-back tragically died following last Sunday’s League One game at London Skolars after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest.

Tetley’s Stadium, along with all other rugby league grounds, will fall silent before Sunday’s Kingstone Press Championship game as players and supporters from Dewsbury and Hunslet pay their respects to Jones.

A Just Giving page set up by the RFL Benevolent Fund, to support Jones’ wife Liz and their five-month old twins, Phoebe and Bobby, had raised almost £70,000 by midweek and a number of efforts to boost the total are planned at matches this weekend.

Rams supporters group Amber Ribbon will join forces with players, cheerleaders and club staff to hold a bucket collection, a half-time draw and a post-match raffle, with all proceeds being donated in aid of the Jones family.

Dewsbury chairman Mark Sawyer learned of Jones’s passing soon after last Sunday’s gallant effort which saw the Rams edged out 32-28 against Championship leaders Leigh Centurions.

Mr Sawyer said: “A sport has been robbed of an inspirational player and friend, and a family has lost a father and a husband.

“Once again, the Rugby League family has come together in honour of Danny, and the players, coaches, staff, volunteers and supporters of Dewsbury Rams will also unite this Sunday in memory of a wonderful player and human being.

“I have absolutely no doubt that our supporters and those making the short journey across from Hunslet will lend their support to these efforts.”
