Rams slip to defeat against Broncos

It was Dewsbury’s 13th defeat of the season and leaves the Rams just three points above the Kingstone Press Championship relegation zone.

The Broncos led 12-0 at half-time and added a further four second half tries as they ensured themselves of a top four finish and a place in the middle eights stage of the competition.

Broncos captain Wes Naiqama slipped through the Rams defence and over for a soft try which he converted after an evenly fought opening 15 minutes.

Dewsbury regained possession from Paul Sykes’ short kick off and went close to scoring when an attacker was held up inches short of the line before London responded with their second try as Israel Eliab darted over to score wide out and Naiqama tagged on a fine goal.

Both sides had spells of possession but the Rams were unable to break a solid Broncos defence before the interval.

Dewsbury struggled to gain meaningful attacking positions at the start of the second half and London took control to score three tries in seven minutes and put themselves firmly on control.

Eliab showed strength to force his way over out wide and Naiqama added another impressive goal from wide out.

Mark Ioane forced his way over for London’s fourth try and Naiqama maintained his 100 per cent kicking record.

Centre Ben Hellewell then made a break before sending wing partner Rhys Williams over for his 21st try of the season and Naiqama again converted to stretch his side’s lead to 30-0.

Dewsbury managed to pull a consolation try back 13 minutes from full-time when Shane Grady broke through and found in-form full-back Josh Guzdek in support to crash over and Sykes tagged on the conversion.

Dewsbury attempted to build on this in the latter stages but the Broncos defence dealt with the spell of Rams pressure.

It was London though who had the last word when Matt Garside spotted a gap in the Rams defence and raced through to score in the corner.

Naiqama missed the conversion attempt for the first time but London had done enough to return to the capital with both points.

Dewsbury must look to regroup in their remaining three matches of the regular season, starting at Workington on Sunday, before mounting a challenge on the Championship Shield when the season splits.
