Rams slip to defeat against Bradford

Kris Welham scored five tries as Bradford Bulls ran out 52-18 winners away to Dewsbury Rams and get their Kingstone Press Championship campaign back on track.

However, the final scoreline was harsh on Dewsbury, who only trailed by two points at half-time, following an excellent display.

The game changed three minutes into the second half as a Dewsbury kick to the right appeared to be knocked down by Omari Caro.

Super League referee James Child waved play on, instead of awarding Dewsbury a scrum, and the Bulls winger was allowed to gather and race the length of the field to score and convert.

Dewsbury launched another attack shortly after but a pass went to ground and Caro scooped it up to race over for another long range try which the winger again improved.

Bradford opened the Rams defence again and Alex Mellor was on the end of a passing move to score Bradford’s third try in eight second half minutes and Caro added a third goal to put his side 32-12 ahead.

Dewsbury’s understrength side tired in the final quarter as Bradford scored a further four tries in the space of 12 minutes.

A long pass sent Welham through a gap to complete his hat-trick, after the powerful centre had grabbed two first half tries.

Welham forced his way over for a fourth try after 66 minutes, which Danny Addy converted, and after James Clare barged his way over, Welham completed his five-timer four minutes from full-time to bring up the Bulls half century.

Dewsbury had matched Bradford stride for stride in a cracking first half try before the game was turned on its head by Caro’s controversial first try.

The Rams led inside 90 seconds when Bradford knocked on in their first set. Paul Sykes and Jason Crookes linked to sent Dalton Grant diving in at the left corner, with Sykes tagging on an excellent touchline goal.

Welham stormed through a Dewsbury tackle and raced over wide out. Addy equalised with an excellent touchline goal.

Dewsbury piled on the pressure and after substitute Jack Teanby was twice held close, Joel Farrell forced his way over and Sykes again converted to put the Rams 12-6 ahead,

Welham charged over for his second but the Rams held a two-point lead and looked to extend their advantage with a promising 39th minute attack.

Lee Gaskell intercepted a pass and stormed away to score a 75 metre try which edged the Bulls ahead at half-time.

Dewsbury looked to respond at the start of the second half but when Caro was allowed to grab a disputed try it took the wind out of the Rams sails and Bradford proved clinical late on.
