Rams secure third victory on the road

Dewsbury Rams secured a third successive away win and moved up to fourth in the Kingstone Press Championship in the process.

The Rams fought back after conceding two early tries and they led 14-12 at half time before pulling clear to open a 23-12 lead before a last minute Swinton try gave the final scoreline a closer look.

Having already beaten Doncaster and Hunslet on the road, Glenn Morrison’s men secured a hat-trick of away wins and a fourth of the campaign as the Rams continue to show they could be dark horses for honours this time.

Swinton called on the services of Chris Bridge, on dual reg from Warrington Wolves, and he was on hand to gather an early Jy-mel Coleman kick to the in-goal area.

Swinton weathered early Dewsbury pressure before taking a 16th minute lead when Bridge was involved in sending James Mendeika over near the posts, with Ryan Shaw converting.

That try came against the run of play but Swinton doubled their lead when Bridge set up good field position with a break before Brad Dwyer stabbed the ball towards the line and one the race to touch down. Shaw again converted.

The Rams stuck to their guns and responded well as Ben substitute Johnston’s neat pass sent Dale Morton over near the left corner.

Johnston scored Dewsbury’s next try, after Swinton had been forced to drop-out, and Morton tagged on the conversion.

Johnston was having a big impact on the game and his kick to the corner was gathered by Scott Hale for the third try as Dewsbury led 14-12 at the break.

Scott Spaven was held on his back over the line early in the second half before Lucas Walshaw dived over for a try after Karl Pryce was held short.

Hale and Gregg Scott were both held up over the line, before Coleman stretched the lead to 19-12 with a clever thinking drop-goal.

Dewsbury again broke on the left for Hale to add his second try after 73 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

Swinton did manage a last minute consolation try, which guaranteed them a bonus point, when Bridge sent Martin Ainscough over and Hall converted but it was Dewsbury, who celebrated another away success.
