Rams go down to last-minute Workington try

A last-minute try from Brett Carter saw Workington snatch an unlikely win against Dewsbury Rams at the Tetley’s Stadium.

Rams looked to have returned to winning ways as they led 16-6 at half-time, but failure to add to their lead after the break proved costly as they went down 16-18.

They have now failed to win a game in the Championship since the start of March, slipping to ninth in the table.

The home side started slowly, indebted to a Workington fumble near the line to avoid conceding in the first five minutes.

The visitors, however, looked sharp and duly took the lead as Jason Mossop crashed over in the corner, Carter converting well.

Having lost five league games in a row, the home fans were understandably worried to see their side behind again.

But rather than collapse, the try galvanised Dewsbury, who were furious to see play pulled back for a scrum when the advantage would surely have yielded a try.

Undeterred, the hosts finally got on the scoresheet mid-way through the half, James Donaldson touching down in the corner.

Bobbie Goulding’s conversion drifted wide, leaving Rams two points behind, but the home faithful didn’t have to wait long to see their side take the lead.

Minutes later, Lucas Walshaw found the gap to ensure Rams’ period of dominance was well rewarded, Goulding making no mistake this time with a simple conversion.

Dewsbury were revitalised by the turnaround, and seemed to be running away with the game when they scored again on the stroke of half-time,

A well-worked scrum saw Keiran Hyde slide over under the posts, Goulding again converting to give the home team a commanding lead of 16-6 at the break.

Dewsbury looked to carry their momentum in to the second half, and only a strong tackle prevented Aaron Brown adding a fourth try.

However, when the next try arrived it was Workington that scored it, Jamie Acton crossing the line out wide and Carter nailing another tricky conversion.

Suddenly the game was wide open and soon after Karl Pryce’s crunching tackle ended a Workington breakaway, Hyde sliced an attempted drop goal horribly wide from close range.

But just as Dewsbury looked like they may hold on for a valuable win, Carter broke the home side’s hearts as he scored under the sticks, adding the extras to seal a narrow victory.
