Rams can receive boost from World Cup success

Matches, even involving the unfancied rugby league nations, have been played out in front of packed grounds and the competition is already being hailed a huge success even before the knock-out stages.

World Cup matches played at Championship grounds in Leigh, Rochdale, Halifax and Workington were played in front of sell-out crowds.

Mr Sawyer said: “I was at Huddersfield for the England-Ireland World Cup game and I was amazed at the atmosphere.

“There were loads of school children and families at the game and it would be great if we could attract a few more of those supporters to our matches next season.

“I also think the game could do with some razzamatazz. You only have to look at what happens with darts, which is played in front of packed arenas week in week out.

“We have to do something to attract more people to our games.”

Dewsbury have already announced that season ticket prices have been frozen and with the euphoria the World Cup has created, it could benefit the Rams and other Championship clubs.

Mr Sawyer will join other Championship chairmen at a meeting at Batley today when the future of the game at this level is being discussed.

Fixtures for next season, which could still include the Northern Rail Cup, are also on the agenda.

Mr Sawyer revealed that Dewsbury have increased their playing budget by £40,000 this season so they are able to compete with other Championship clubs and Glenn Morrison has put together a useful squad, including former Super League hooker Wayne Godwin.
