Places still up for grabs at Dewsbury Rams, says head coach Lee Greenwood

Dewsbury chief Lee Greenwood insists that his squad for Sunday’s clash with Bradford Bulls won’t be the one that starts in their Betfred Championship opener against Leigh Centurions on January 31.

This weekend’s friendly with the Bulls will be the Rams’ final pre-season outing before the start of the competitive season and Greenwood is keen to give every player the chance to earn a place in the 17 for their league opener against Leigh.

Dewsbury lost 26-24 in their friendly fixture at Keighley Cougars last week, conceding two late tries after leading by eight points with just minutes to go.

But Greenwood insisted: “Friendlies aren’t for winning and losing, they are for giving people game time.

"We have a lot of lads stepping up from different levels who are trying to make a name for themselves in the Championship.

“They need to prove to me that they can be in the 17 and I have got to give them the opportunity to do that in these games.”

The Rams head coach says that places are still “up for grabs” ahead of the first Championship clash and continued: “The squad that takes the field on Sunday won’t take the field against Leigh.

“But there are certainly spots up for grabs in the 17 and that is what the lads will be told this week.”
