NRL's 'six again' law can bring a halt to underhand tactics in Championship, says Dewsbury Rams' Lee Greenwood

DEWSBURY RAMS head coach Lee Greenwood would be happy to see the introduction of the six again rule in the Betfred Championship to help cut out infringements at the play the ball.

The new law was used for the first time in the NRL last weekend, as the Australian competition made its return behind closed doors after being suspended by the coronavirus pandemic.

The rule was introduced in an attempt to prevent players from slowing down the play-the-ball, with the referee resetting the tackle count instead of awarding a penalty if there is an infringement at the ruck.

The introduction of the law on these shores is set to be discussed by the Rugby Football League (RFL) Laws Committee next week and after watching the NRL action from last weekend, Greenwood is an advocate of introducing the rule.

“It worked totally fine, I would imagine it would come into our game pretty quickly,” said Greenwood.

“I don’t see why not. Whatever rule you put in people will try and find a way to make it work for them.

“I would be happy with it, there is all sorts of messing around at the play-the-ball from attackers and defenders, certainly at our level where it is a little bit slower.

We don’t coach any underhand tactics when we are training and any infringements that are made at the play-the-ball, I would be happy with another six tackles.”
