A crowd of over 1,300 braved the freezing weather and howling wind in support of the veteran winger.

Buchanan has made 131 appearances, scoring 62 tries, during his eight years with the Rams.

Speaking after last Sunday’s 28-12 victory over the Red Devils Morrison said: “What Austin delivers on and off the field for the club is great and I am glad the people turned out like they did for him.

“Hopefully he will have made some good money out of it and the boys gave him a game to remember by getting a good victory against a Super League club.

“We want to keep Austin here. We didn’t know how he would come back from injury 12 months ago but we said there would always be a role for him here while ever I’m here.

“He’s one of those people who is 100 per cent for the club and he’s good for the dressing room, which is what you need to keep everyone smiling.”

Buchanan was unable to cap his testimonial by getting on the scoresheet but celebrated the win with his teammates after and then held a question and answer session with supporters in the bar.

Morrison also praised newcomers Tony Adamson and Zach Johnson, who made their first appearances for the club last Sunday having missed out on the Boxing Day defeat to Batley Bulldogs and both produced impressive displays.

Morrison added: “Zach was hitting the line every time he had the ball, he’s a local lad and had a great debut and hopefully he is set for a good career with us.

“We just need to work on his fitness and give him longer spells in the games before the start of the season.

“I thought the boys played pretty well. We were looking for a performance and sticking to a game plan and although results aren’t that important, to get a win over a Super League side is a bonus.

“We looked really good with ball in hand and defensively we were solid.”
