Morrison pleased with Rams’ pre-season form

The big kick off to a new era of Championship rugby is little over a week away and the Rams completed their pre-season programme with a 34-6 victory over London Broncos last Sunday.

Dewsbury previously secured a friendly victory over Super League Salford and, speaking after Sunday’s win over the Broncos, Morrison said: “We had a strong side out and wanted to test ourselves against a full-time side and it was a great performance.

“We only let one try in which was really good and it was the same against Salford, another full-time squad, when we were also pretty impressive, so I’m happy.”

London’s only try came while Dewsbury were down to 12-men following the sin-binning of Scott Hale but Morrison believes his side will get better.

The coach added:“We are still improving and working on things and we’ve said throughout pre-season that we want to be ready for Sheffield (in the Rams’ opening league fixture).

“We have put down a marker to see where we are at and also shown everyone else where we are at.

“We had spoken to the team saying it was as much about defence as it was about scoring tries and we did that really well.

“It’s something we have been working hard on and I thought we got it right.

“Defence is what wins games, especially early in the competition, when the pitches are like they are and I was really pleased with the way we had each other’s backs.”

Speaking of the threats from Championship rivals, Morrison added: “It will be tough for everyone to travel down to London, obviously Bradford have spent a lot of money and are full-time, as are Leigh, then there’s Featherstone doing the same and Halifax and Sheffield have good squads, so there are a lot of teams going out to do something this year.”
