Morrison delighted with Rams’ opening day display

The Rams produced a terrific display to record a 19-10 victory in front of a 1,300-plus crowd in their opening Championship game at Tetley’s Stadium.

The club ran a successful promotion campaign to entice supporters to the game and it helped create a cracking atmosphere under floodlights with the attendance an incredible 51 per cent of the Eagles fixture last season.

Speaking after the game, Morrison said: “The club did their job to get the people to the game and I spoke before that it was then up to the players to get the win and we are happy with what happened on and off the pitch.

“I spoke to a Leeds Rhinos season ticket holder who said how good our promotions are and he’s told me he will be coming to watch us when Leeds don’t have a game.

“That is what we want, people enjoying rugby league and getting them through the gates and to get 1,300 at the (Sheffield) game was a really good effort by everyone.”

Dewsbury finally ended a 16-match winless streak against Sheffield as they battled back from 10-0 down in the first half and Morrison was also quick to praise his team’s impressive efforts.

He added: “It was great to get the win after all the hard work the boys have put in during the off season.

“Everyone said we had some good results (in pre-season) but it didn’t mean anything unless we got the win last Friday.

“(Sheffield) was the game we had been focusing on all pre-season.

“We made it hard on ourselves in the first half as I didn’t think we played that well and we defended for almost all the half but we showed the spirit we have when we held them to nil in the second half and came out on top.

“The defence was outstanding and the (Sheffield) tries came off one of our errors and the other from a kick that could have bounced the other way but I’m happy for the team.

“We have got a team who want to work hard for each other and when the chips are down, they have each others’ backs and that is what we are about as a club on and off the field.”

Dewsbury now travel to Workington Town on Sunday as they face a side smarting from last week’s 30-6 defeat at Batley Bulldogs.

Morrison was at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium to watch the Rams’ next opponents, who were exploited on the defensive right.

Former Shaw Cross Sharks player Shaun Squires scored four tries on his competitive Bulldogs debut but the Cumbrians are expected to be a much stronger proposition at home.
