Heavy Woollen lads can be proud of Bulldogs effort

Batley coach John Kear took time to speak to the Heavy Woollen lads after his side’s 68-6 win and had nothing but praise for the amateur side’s efforts.

Speaking after Sunday’s game, former Bulldogs favourite Danny Maun, said: “John Kear said they were a credit to the amateur game and have done themselves proud.

“I thought we matched them in the first half and we managed to score first.

“It was always going to be a tough ask in the second half, especially with them playing downhill.

“We had four training sessions together and coming up against a Championship side, who I think will do well this year, the lads can be proud of their efforts.

“I thought some of the young kids did really well. Danny Crabtree and George Croisdale were exceptional along with Joel Gibson.

“I’m proud as punch of the lads and it wouldn’t surprise me if Batley put a similar score on North Wales this week.”

It proved a memorable occasion for Dewsbury Moor winger Croisdale as he opened the scoring with a third minute try for the Heavy Woollen outfit.

Kear added: “The amateur lads deserved our respect and that is what we showed them with the team selection and the manner of how we played.

“Gibson is a very good player and I thought the full-back went well and some of the forwards bent their backs and did well.”
