Godwin inspired Rams to outstanding derby victory

The Rams produced, arguably, their best display of the season to run in seven tries and record their biggest derby win in many years.

It was also the first time Morrison had tasted success in the Heavy Woollen derby and the Rams coach revealed after: “We asked Wayne to play 80 minutes and he looked me in the eye and said I’ve got your back and we’ll win this — that is all you can ask from your captain.

“To play 80 minutes in the middle of a derby like that when Batley threw everything at us shows the character of him. I’m proud of Wayne but I’m proud of all the boys.

“Tommy Gallagher has been injured for the last few weeks. He played (against Swinton) and probably didn’t deliver what he needed and I said he needed to pick his game up and he made an impact off the bench and scored a good try.”

Centre Shane Grady opened the scoring after just 90 seconds and had a hand in setting up a try for Godwin.

Grady was named in the Kingstone Press Championship team of the week, along with Rob Spicer, who also had an outstanding game in the second row.

Victory left Dewsbury fifth in the table but they are not in action this week due to the Challenge Cup fifth round.

Morrison wants the Rams to kick on from their impressive derby victory when they return to action with a trip to Keighley Cougars on Sunday May 4.

Morrison said: “ I was glad we were playing Batley last week because we could get up for it but we need to be able to get up for every game we play no matter where they are in the table.”
