Dewsbury Moor cheer on Burgess champions

The 57-strong party swapped their maroon and gold Moor shirts for that of the Rabbitohs’ famous green and red, in support of former players George and Tom Burgess.

The Burgess twins, along with elder brother Sam, began their careers as juniors with the Dewsbury Moor club and have become household names Down Under with one of the biggest clubs in rugby league.

Sam produced a stunning man-of-the-match display last October to help the Rabbitohs win Australia’s NRL and has since switched codes, returning to the UK to join Bath Rugby Union.

Dewsbury lads George and Tom helped South Sydney create history last Sunday as the Rabbitohs sealed a 30-0 win over Super League champions St Helens — the biggest win in World Club Challenge history.

Sam watched his brothers from the stands, taking his seat alongside Rabbitohs co-owner Russell Crowe.

Paula Brown ran a trip from Dewsbury Moor, as they travelled to support their two former players.

Moor Under-10s manager Paula said: “We wanted to run a trip to support the Burgess brothers but had to limit it to 57 places due to the size of the coach.

“In the end we could have sold the tickets two or three times over such was the interest from our club.

“We had people on the coach who play in the rugger tots right the way through to members of the open age team.

“James Delaney played with the brothers as juniors but the Burgess’s are heroes to many of our younger players and who they all aspire to.

“We were sat with a group of St Helens supporters, who thought it was strange that a group of English kids were supporting the Rabbitohs but when we explained, they thought it was great that we had gone along to show our support for the brothers.”

Support from their home club did not go unnoticed by the Burgess brothers either.

Paula explained: “We took along a Dewsbury Moor banner and the brothers came across to us at the end of the match.

“Tom held our banner on the pitch and spent time chatting to us and signing autographs, which was great.”

George, Tom and Sam Burgess made a surprise visit to Dewsbury Moor, while they were over in England for the 2014 World Cup and have not forgotten their roots.

George and Tom returned to Australia with their South Sydney teammates to prepare for the new NRL season.

On Monday, Tom tweeted to his 41,000 followers: “Nearly back to Sydney. 1 more leg to do and reflecting on a great week in England. It’s all about creating memories!.”

George also took to Twitter, posting a picture of himself holding the World Club Challenge trophy and his winners medal.
