A 'hard-working bunch' - Dewsbury Rams coach Lee Greenwood happy with squad's attitude ahead of new Betfred Championship campaign

Dewsbury Rams' squad might not boast as many big names as some of their Betfred Championship rivals, but boss Lee Greenwood insists nobody will work harder.

The Championship fixture list pits Rams against the likes of Featherstone Rovers, York City Knights, Bradford Bulls and Toulouse Olympique, who have all made high-profile signings in a bid to win promotion to Super League.

But Greenwood is confident Dewsbury’s players are at the club “for the right reasons” and will give everything they’ve got when the season starts next month.

“It’s not something new,” he said of some second tier clubs’ big spending.

“We have always seen the top few clubs spending loads of money, because they seem to have good backers and they have the most distribution money.

“It’s not easy - a lot of the players they sign, you have shown an interest in and you might have spoken to some of them, but you know when it comes to money you can get blown out of the water.

“But what we end up with is guys coming here for the right reasons.

“They are certainly not coming here for the money and what we end up with is a hard-working bunch.

“That’s certainly what we’ve got now.”

Greenwood also feels anyone underestimating Rams this year will be making a mistake.

Dewsbury were in good form before coronavirus led to the Championship being suspended last March and Greenwood pointed out: “We have got people like Paul Sykes, Liam Finn, Michael Knowles, Chris Annakin, Adam Ryder, Matt Fleming - when you go through it, we are not a bad team ourselves.

“I just think we have always got to look and be creative with who we are bringing in.

“We can’t just open a cheque book and get that random guy who has been released by a Super League club.

“We get numerous lads on trial who have been recommended to us, maybe from the student or amateur game and we will always have a look.

“Other clubs don’t do that, but I like it. It keeps me on my toes and it shows we do give people a chance.

“If you are good enough, you’ll get in.”
