Rams close in on new coach

DEWSBURY Rams will announce their new permanant coach at a fans forum on Wednesday September 5 — just three days after final Co-operative Championship game of the season at home to Sheffield Eagles.

The Rams have had interest from more than 20 coaches and were due to start interviews this week.

Paul Broadbent has done a fine job as interim coach and he got a first win last Sunday when the Rams overcame Hunslet Hawks 34-22 at South Leeds Stadium.

The win guarantees Dewsbury a seventh place finish in the Championship whatever the result of the game against play-off bound Sheffield on September 2.

Chairman Mark Sawyer has confirmed that Broadbent has applied for the job, although he remains tight lipped on the identity of the other applicants.

Mr Sawyer said: “Paul is one of the coaches to have applied, we have made no secret of that, and clearly everything he has done so far has been a plus for him.

“He got a first win last week and we were competitive against Batley but he is also fully aware that there is no certainty (about the job).

“There have been rumours about regarding the coach but what we can say is, that until Warren (Jowitt) leaving, we didn’t speak to anyone, that is not how we work at Dewsbury.”

Broadbent was delighted with the way his understrength side performed at Hunlset, saying: “It is not about me trying to prove I can do a good job it’s the guys out there doing their best.

“They have played together all year and have worked hard for each other and we want them to go away with a positive attitude and plan for the future.

“Hunslet are playing better and have a full strength squad. They took Sheffield close the previous week and we knew it would be a challenge but we worked hard and were pleased to come away with the result.”

Ayden Faal has had an operation on a troublesome hand, Steve Crossley is still suffering from a broken collar bone, Ben Jones (groin) and Austin Buchanan (knee) were all ruled out of the trip to Hunslet with injuries, while Billy Harris was also missing but it gave several fringe players the chance to shine.

Dewsbury now turn their attentions to the final game against the Eagles and Broadbent added: “Sheffield will come here wanting to win. There is still jockying for key league places and will come out all guns blazing.

“We are under no illusions that it will be a tough game but we will look to stand up to them and come away with the win.

“The boys have come through a lot of adversity and a difficult situation but they have worked hard and bounced back and we have seen the self belief and confidence growing.”
