THE Central Yorkshire League Division One promotion race is gathering pace and tomorrow sees a crucial round of games for the leading contenders.

Hopton Mills and Ossett are joint leaders with 32 points, four ahead of Moorlands and five in front of Buttershaw St Pauls and Wakefield St Michaels.

Despite last week’s poor weather, Hopton managed to complete 93 overs of their Mirfield derby at Moorlands before rain finally forced the players from the field.

The game was evenly poised with Moorlands 127-7 chasing Hopton’s 188-7 before the sides received two points apiece.

Mills return to Woodbottom tomorrow when they will be chasing a sixth win of the season against Oulton.

Michael Carroll is usually a key figure in Hopton’s bowling attack but last week he opened the batting and made 49, staking his claim as an all-rounder.

Moorlands travel to one of their promotion rivals Buttershaw tomorrow, Ossett entertain Liversedge and St Michaels are at home to East Leeds as things hot up.

Neil Parkinson rolled back the years last week as he was promoted to Mirfield Parish Cavaliers’ first team and blasted 84 not out from just 41 balls in a rain affected draw against Batley.

That was another game building towards an exciting finish as Batley reached 255-6 in reply to Parish’s 298-6 when the rain curtailed proceedings.

Parish travel to third-bottom Carlton tomorrow aiming to climb from sixth place in the table, while it is a big weekend for the Cavaliers second team.

Mirfield Parish A can move out of the bottom two in Division Two if they defeat Buttershaw St Pauls A before turning their attentions to the Wheatley Cup quarter-final at home to Liversedge A on Sunday.

Mirfield face a second division mid-table clash at home to Gildersome.

Hanging Heaton will be aiming to reach the last 16 of the ECB National Cup on Sunday when they travel to Nottinghamshire Premier League side Cuckney in the regional final, while they are away to Lightcliffe in Bradford League Division One tomorrow.
