Parish look to start win run – double test awaits Heaton

MIRFIELD Parish Cavaliers have had a real mixed bag of fortunes since returning to the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division.

Having made a winning start to the campaign, with an emphatic victory over Wakefield St Michaels, Parish were thrashed by champions Wrenthorpe, then had the rarity of a tie with Hunslet Nelson before losing by 104 runs against Altofts last week.

They will look to turn things around tomorrow with a trip to Northowram Fields, one of five teams below them in the table.

Victory for the Wellhouse Lane side would certainly boost their confidence, especially as Parish are out of both the Jack Hampshire Trophy and Heavy Woollen Cup.

Moorlands have flirted with promotion over the past few seasons and with Liversedge and Batley to contend with in Division One, it may be a tough ask for them to make it to the top flight.

They have made a decent start, which they will look to continue at home to Methley A tomorrow.

Hopton Mills, along with last season’s relegated duo Scholes and Caribbean, are expected to be among the front runners in Division Two and they travel to Gildersome aiming to improve on their fifth place.

Hanging Heaton are involved in the tie of the Priestley Cup first round on Sunday when they welcome Pudsey St Lawrence to Bennett Lane for the second time in as many weeks.

Heaton took the honours in last Saturday’s league game when Umar Rehman produced an exceptional spell of spin bowling, which yielded 6-18.

You have to go back to 2000 for Heaton’s last appearance in the Priestley final, when Yorkshire star Anthony McGrath steered East Bierley to a record third straight win.

Heaton warm up for the tie when John Carruthers takes second-placed Heaton to second-bottom Baildon in Bradford League Division One tomorrow.
