Ounsley crowned world champion

DEWSBURY Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Phil Ounsley won a gold medal at the No-Gi Brazilian Jiujitsu Championships, in Long Beach, California, last Saturday.

The championships is the most prestigious event of its kind in the world and Phil took the competition so seriously he stayed in Los Angeles for a week, which gave him the chance to train with some top level MMA fighters.

Phil, who fights out of Neil Hall’s Allegiance MMA Centre at Alexandra Mills on Bradford Road, won gold in the senior heavyweight division. He took less than a minute to defeat an American fighter in the semi-finals using his trademark jumping guillotine choke.

He was against another tough American in the final and nearly ended the fight in the same way but his durable opponent refused to submit.

In the end, Phil, of Thornhill, recorded a dominant points victory to take the gold medal after switching from one submission attempt to another.

Phil has had a very busy and successful year. He won a silver medal at the European Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, took gold at the British Open Brazilian Jiujitsu Competition and silver in the British Open No-Gi submission wrestling competition.He also holds a British police submission wrestling title.

Although Phil is known as a MMA fighter, he is an avid grappler and has a passion for competiton in both combat sports.
