DESPITE NOT playing competitively since March, Dewsbury Rams head coach Lee Greenwood says that some players have returned to pre-season training fitter than last year.

Players have been able to keep up their cardio fitness through walking and running while gyms have been opened intermittently over the last nine months.

Greenwood feels the enforced break has had its benefits and revealed that Jason Walton has returned to full training after overcoming a long-term injury.

“The general fitness is really good,” he said.

“One thing everyone has been able to do since March is get out there on walks and runs. Gyms have been largely closed but players have been able to get out and exercise.

“Looking back at our results from last pre-season, some people are actually fitter. There are no niggles or injuries because people have been doing no contact since March.

“In some respects, players have been better for it. Injury wise, Jason Walton is returning to full training.

“The only players who aren’t back in training are Rhys Davies but we have no other long-term injuries. Fitness wise I am quite happy, nobody is way off where they were last season.”
