Lee Greenwood aiming to turn Dewsbury Rams into a top-half Championship team

Lee Greenwood has ambitions of turning Dewsbury Rams into a top-half Championship side and admits that for as long as promotion is on the table, Super League should be the club’s ultimate aim.

Dewsbury enjoyed a fine start to the 2020 campaign, winning three of their four league games before their season was ultimately canned due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

They had beaten the likes of Halifax and Widnes Vikings but despite their promising start, will receive distribution funding based on their 12th-placed finish in 2019.

Greenwood does not immediately expect to be challenging for a place in Super League in 2021 but is aiming to improve the Rams’ finish year on year.

“While there is promotion and relegation, we have got to aim for Super League.

“Other clubs are obviously going for that now and we are not in a position to be considering that.

“But when this year is done and promotion and relegation hopefully stays, you are only ever one season away from Super League.

“If anyone is not thinking about that when they are coaching a team, then, for me, they shouldn’t be involved. You have got to be in a competition to win it.

“That might seem unrealistic but we will have certain goals within that we want to achieve and stepping stones to get to that.

“The plan for this year was to do much better in the league and we started well on course to do a lot better.

“That would have brought more finance in, if the season had gone as normal and we would have started building.

“The plan has been delayed a little bit. There is obviously uncertainty regarding funding after 2021.

“That is the goal, to build year on year. That increased funding helps you be more competitive, to be competing around the top of the league, which is where I want us to be.

“With the funding for after 2021, we have just got to wait and see on that. All we can do next year is try and play as well as we can and get as many wins to finish high up that table as possible.

“If there are any decisions regarding funding or if the league wants to restructure itself, we are in the best position possible.”
