REISS BUTTERWORTH feels Dewsbury Rams is the best place for his development as he targets a regular run in the first team.

The 21-year-old has joined Lee Greenwood’s side from Super League outfit Huddersfield Giants.

The hooker came through the academy at Bradford Bulls and spent the 2019 season on loan at the Rams’ Heavy Woollen rivals Batley Bulldogs. He made his Super League debut for the Giants against St Helens this year.

Butterworth is hoping to learn from the likes of Paul Sykes and Liam Finn, who have made close to 900 career appearances between them.

“Whilst at Huddersfield, Lee got in contact asking what my plans are for next year and after speaking to Lee I knew straight away that I wanted to sign for Dewsbury,” said Butterworth.

“I just want the opportunity to play regular first team games week in, week out. It would be massive for me and my development as a player.

“I want to learn off the coaching staff and the experience within the squad, like Liam Finn and Paul Sykes.

“Having played at Batley for the majority of last year I played Dewsbury a few times and it was always a good game to be part of especially due to how loud the Rams fans are.

"Another big factor in coming here is the facilities, which are really good.”

Meanwhile, Sonny Esslemont has left the Rams to focus on work commitments.
