Some clubs, such as Halifax and Rochdale, have already publicly stated they will not be taking part due to financial and player welfare concerns.

Greenwood is keen to return to play again this year, with fans set to be allowed into stadia from October 1.

However, Dewsbury will only be competing again in 2020 if the tournament proves financially viable with clubs needing to bring players off furlough leave and pay for Covid-19 testing.

“Because it is now an optional tournament, and not a proper league or cup competition, everyone is looking ahead to next year thinking what is the point in doing that,” said Greenwood.

“It will be disrupting your pre-season for what is essentially a series of friendlies and that is how I think a lot of clubs are looking at it.

“There might be a cost element to it as well, with things like testing, so that is another reason not to do it.

“For me, it seems a lot of people are looking ahead to next year.

“If it is affordable we want to play. I want to coach games and players want to play.

“If it is affordable and doable we should all want to do it, we are disappointed it is not the league but if that is what is available then everyone should want to do it.”
