O’Regan on ABA title trail

TEENAGE boxer Cory O’Regan is hoping to be at his Sunday best when he fights in the National Quarter-Final of the ABA Championships this Sunday at Great Barr, Birmingham.

Cory, 15, from Birstall, who fights out of the Cleckheaton Police Boxing Academy, won the Yorkshire Championship last Sunday beating H Ghaznewal of the Bradford Police Club. The fight in the 51-54kg category was stopped in the third round with Cory well on top.

The Cleckheaton club held a boxing show at the Cedar Court Hotel Bradford last week with home boxers winning seven of their 11 bouts.

Hamza Hussain won the boxer-of-the-night award after he beat a former national champion, Ryan Brown of the Gus Robinson Club, in a terrific contest.

Kabbir Khan, aged 11, lost on a close decision against Bailey Dyas of the Grimsby Boxing Academy.

There was a majority decision win for Lewis Deegan against Keelan Taylor, also of Grimsby.

Connor Hall completed his third successive win when he beat Naim Ashfak of Keighley.

Debutant, Declan Scott lost on a majority decision against Joe Lumb of the Sedbergh club, Bradford.

Oliver Hedges is unbeaten in his fourth contest after he defeated Jack Exley of Grimethorpe while Ben Findlay beat Lewis Harrison of Burmantofts Leeds.

Callum Pashley, who has been unlucky in losing his previous bouts, was hoping to record his first win against Kieran Ryan of the Slip Club Knottingley. However, Callum’s shoulder ‘popped out’, by the time he had returned to the corner it had restored itself. But while the boxer declared himself ready to go again the doctor ended the contest, giving the win to his opponent.

Danny Riach lost his bout against Daniel Machin of Grimsby. Riach’s headguard came off three times during the bout and under ABA rules it is an automatic disqualification.

Mohammed Nadeem put on an impressive display in his debut, beating Jason Thomas.

Unbeaten Jordan Schofield, a 27-year-old, who only took up boxing at the start of the season, earned his fourth win against Carl Harper of Keighley.

The show was rounded off with Keith Tate taking on two nine-year-olds and an 11-year-old on the pads which showcased the potential of the club’s youngest members and proved a real hit with the audience.
