Nostalgia: Floods aplenty in 1920s Batley Carr

This dramatic photographic depiction of the great Batley flood of May 1925 was sent in to the newsroom by Reporter Series reader Betty Webster.

The picture was taken in Batley Carr, which used to flood regularly as suggested at by the area’s name – a “carr” was a traditional term for a swampy flood-land.

The water damaged goods in warehouses, shops and homes each time. Bradford Road in particular was a regular victim of the floods – and appeared to be more of a river than a street.

Eventually, work was done to clean out the beck, widen culverts and introduce regular maintenance.
