Morton etches name onto Birkdale honours board

Dewsbury golfer Josh Morton will have his named etched on the honours board at the Royal Birkdale club after success in the Birkdale Goblet last week.

The 19-year-old played in two competitions over the weekend, one at Hillside golf club where he came sixth, before heading to Royal Birkdale to compete on the championship course.

Morton won the Birkdale Goblet, while there was a second competition, where the two aggregate scores for the competitions were calculated for the a North West of England Links Championship.

Morton also triumphed there and will see his name added to the honours board in the clubhouse at Birkdale .

Earlier in the year Morton entered The Open qualifier at Moortown golf club and finished sixth before losing in a play off, although he was called up as a reserve to play at Woburn.

He also played in the Moor Allerton Classic, finishing second after playing a round of six under for his last nine holes.

Morton is currently third place in the Yorkshire Order of Merit and 10th in the Northern Order of Merit.

He also recently played at Middlesbrough in the North of England Youth Championship where he came 12th.

Morton has been playing golf since he was around eight years old.

He started playing at Hanging Heaton Golf Club, which was where his granddad played and is local to where the family live.

He now plays at Huddersfield GC in their scratch team.

He also plays for the Huddersfield and Halifax Union team which he has played for since he was a junior.
