A young Dewsbury Rams side gave a good account of themselves despite suffering a 38-14 defeat to full-time Sheffield Eagles in Sunday’s pre-season friendly.

Sheffield took an eighth minute lead when Rob Worrincy burrowed over from close range and Michael Knowles converted but Dewsbury struck back when Brad Delaney’s neat kick through rebounded off a defender for Jason Muranka to pounce for the try, which Paul Sykes converted.

Dewsbury posed problems for the Eagles but it was the visitors who regained their lead when Knowles dived on a kick inches before it rolled dead and the try was awarded after referee Michael Woodhead consulted his touch judge. Knowles converted.

A fine passing move ended with Ryan Millar sending Elliot Minchella racing over and Knowles converted but Dewsbury again responded well as Josh Guzdek did well to plant the ball down in the corner for his first try for the Rams, reducing the half-time deficit to 18-10.

The impressive Knowles kicked behind the Rams defence for Menzie Yere to pounce for Sheffield’s fourth try.

Dewsbury looked to hit back but a long pass was intercepted by Ben Blackmore and the winger outpaced the defence on a terrific 80 metre run to the line. Knowles added his fourth goal and the Eagles led 28-10.

Sykes opened the Eagles defence with a superb break but could only pass into touch when attempting to send Ryan Langton over for the try.

Jason Crookes pulled a try back when he met a pass at pace and barged through the Eagles defence to score only for Millar to grab a sixth Sheffield try following a fine break by Quentin Laula-Togagae. Knowles again converted.

Blackmore was sin-binned for an illegal tackle but the Sheffield defence kept Dewsbury at bay and the visitors completed victory when Millar was on the end of a sweeping move to score his second try four minutes from time, which completed Sheffield’s win.
