Spenborough’s senior athletes made a steady start to their campaign in the Northern Athletics League by placing third in their Division Three fixture.
Spenborough hosted the meeting at the Princess Mary Stadium and enjoyed a number of victories on their home track.
The host club had an encouraging start through victory in the hammer throw by Bethany Thomas, with Charlotte Bell coming second in the B event.
On the track, team manager Emma Rawnsley was a convincing winner in the 400 metres hurdles and Rosa McKie completed a Spen double by winning the B event.
McKie and Rawnsley were first in the triple jump A and B events, while McKie also placed first in the high jump for a hat-trick of event victories as she made a fantastic start to the new season.
There was another double victory in the shot putt courtesy of Bethany and Fiona Thomas winning the A and B events.
Paul Davis gave a front running display to win the men’s 1,500m and he was ably supported by Simon Bolland placing second in the B race.
There was an exciting finish to the men’s 5,000m with Spenborough’s Joe Sagar just losing out to Matthew Crehan from St Helens after the pair were locked together for most of the race.
Spenborough also recorded a second place finish in the 5,000m B race, through Kevin Ogden.
In the field events, Darren Thomas won the discus throw and placed second in the shot putt and hammer throws.
Brothers Glenn and Toby Aspindle each placed second in the javelin throw A and B events.
The most industrious Spenborogh athlete in the opening fixture was veteran all rounder Jason Newall who took part in all of the jumping events.
He also placed fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase and finished off with a leg in the relay race to finish off a busy afternoon.
St Helens won the match with Manchester finishing second. Behind Spenborough were Southport, Halifax and Trafford ‘B’ team.
The next match is at Litherland Sports Park, Sefton, on Sunday, June 4.
