Bolland inspires Spen's team to creditable finish in West Yorkshire fixture

Runners from Spenborough Athletics Club took part in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League fixture at Thornes Park in Wakefield last Sunday afternoon.

Hosts Wakefield Harriers club successfully hosted the third league meeting, with the event incorporating the 2018 Club Cross Country Championship and glorious autumn sunshine and excellent running conditions greeted the 700-plus competitors

Simon Bolland led the Spenborough senior men runners, placing 20th and leading the team to a 10th place finish overall.

Other runners from Spen were Tom Dart (40th), Martin Hall (83rd), Neil Barker (121st), Dan Dalton (139th) and Dave Butler (154th).

The race was won by Adrien Holliday from Leeds, while the Harriers’ senior men won the team event thanks to excellent runs from Mark Bostock (fifth), Ben Butler (10th), Matthew O’Connor (12th) and Daniel Franks (14th).

Jenni Muston enjoyed another fine run, placing ninth in the senior women’s race.

Former Yorkshire champion Julie Briscoe finished fifth in a competitive ladies race.

Among the younger Spenborough athletes there were good runs by Mathew Dalton who finished eighth in the Under-13 Boys race and Imogen Atkinson, who was seventh in the Under-11s Girls race.

Imogen led the U11s, which also included Poppy Henson (31st) and Milie Rhodes (41st), to a fine seventh team placing.

Ben Whitaker was 47th in the Under-11s Boys race and Sophia Foulger finished 39th in the Under-13 Girls event.
