Moorlands target huge Hampshire Cup shock

Wrenthorpe are regarded as one of the strongest sides in Yorkshire club cricket and Division One promotion chasers Moorlands face a daunting task if they are to reach the Central Yorkshire League’s premier cup final for the first time.

Wrenthorpe are the Premier Division champions and have ambitions to win four trophies this season. They are already in the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy final, where they will be aiming to become the first CYL side to win that title, and are also targetting a Central Yorkshire League and cup double plus the council play-offs.

Moorlands will feel disappointed that their efforts in reaching the last four did not gain the reward of a lucrative home tie but they will go to Wrenthorpe under no pressure.

Moorlands are involved in a five-team promotion race in Division One and travel to Oulton tomorrow (1pm). They are fourth in the table, just three points behind leaders Buttershaw St Pauls and second-placed Carlton, who meet another of the promotion chasers, Batley.

With Liversedge not in action, victory would see Moorlands move up at least one place in what is turning out to be one of the most keenly contested races in years.

Mirfield Parish Cavaliers visit Hunslet Nelson tomorrow knowing victory could see them move into the top five in the Premier Division, while Hopton Mills face a crunch game in Division Two as they host second-placed Wrenthorpe A.

Mills are fourth following last week’s quickfire win over Caribbean, when they dismissed the home side for 49 as opening bowlers Michael Carroll (6-23) and Richard Myers (4-19) did the damage.

Hanging Heaton must combat the threat of the leading Bradford League run scorer when Jamaican Lorenzo Ingram and his Division One title-chasing Farsley side visit Bennett Lane tomorrow (1.30pm).

Ingram has scored 825 runs in 12 innings, averaging 103.13, but looks set to missing out on breaking Chris Taylor’s record of the quickest man to reach 1,000 runs in a season. He did not bat last week as Farsley raced to 213-1 to beat Baildon, so needs 175 runs on Saturday.

Third-bottom Heaton need the points as they aim to claw away from the relegation zone.
