DEWSBURY Moor pushed President’s Cup holders Halifax Irish all the way before being edged out in a lively Pennine League Premier Division clash.

Halifax, led by their huge pack, took a seventh-minute lead when former Super League man Andy Brocklehurst stormed to the line for a converted try.

Seventeen-year-old Connor Squires gathered James Eatherley’s cross-field kick to score his first senior try and Eatherley’s fine conversion levelled.

Irish prop Jack Holmes scored, with Brocklehurst converting, before ex-Halifax man Chris Norman crossed to make it 16-6.

Moor hit back again when Phil Simpson, James Delaney and Andy Robinson linked for Squires to race 40 metres to the line. Eatherley converted to reduce the half-time arrears to 16-12.

Aaron Brown extended the Irish lead with an unconverted try but AJ Boardman raced 50 metres for Moor’s third try and Eatherley’s conversion pulled the home side to within two points.

Moor had a late chance with a kickable penalty but opted to run the ball and Halifax held out.

Moor will look to show the same level of commitment when they host Hunslet OB on Saturday (2pm)
