Mixed fortunes but Moorlands stay top

WITH teams playing on both Saturday and Sunday, last weekend was a crucial one in the Central Yorkshire League and although there were mixed fortunes for Moorlands, they remain top of Division One.

They got off to a flyer, demolishing strugglers Wakefield Thornes A by 165 runs on Saturday.

Opener Andrew Fortis (89) found support from Stephen Lane as the hosts racked-up 222-8 and that proved too hot for Thornes to handle as Samuel Brynes (4-16) and then Adam Roberts (4-8) skittled out the visitors for just 57.

Moorlands’ fortunes changed at Ossett 24 hours later however, Lane (50) leading the table-toppers to 140-8.

Andrew Walker (3-38) and Muhammad Hafeez (3-31) restricted the Ossett batsmen to unspectacular scoring but the hosts did enough to reach 141-8 with three overs to spare.

It was a similar story for Hopton Mills, Scholes and Liversedge, who all suffered triumph and disappointment in their outings.

On Saturday, Mills hosted East Ardsley who were bowled out for 130 thanks to the efforts of Steven Sperry (3-26) and Samuel Gardiner (3-41).

After stumbling to 18-2, Mills recovered with Gardiner (41) and Stephen Bland (27 not out) at the crease and eventually reached 134-7 after 35.2 overs.

Sunday’s game proved to be a frustrating one for Mills who were defeated by a single run in a thriller at East Leeds.

Gardiner (5-35) was in the wickets again to limit the hosts to 152 all out and he then produced a fine knock of 62 not out as the visitors closed in on their target.

However, the rest of the Mills line-up crumbled under Leeds’ impressive team bowling and they fell agonisingly short with tail-ender Leigh Learie caught lbw going for the winning runs.

Scholes recovered from a 77-run loss at Oulton on Saturday with a six-wicket victory over bottom side Methley A the following day.

Terrific bowling from Mohammed Sharafat (4-40), Matthew Barnes (3-47) and Joseph Duffy (3-25) accounted for Oulton on 142 but Scholes collapsed to 65 all out in reply.

Methley put in a game effort on Sunday, scoring 169-6 in the face of an attack from Richard West (2-28) and Joseph Duffy (2-31).

But the Scholes order responded and Andrew Spencer (53 not out) and Duffy (76) hauled them to 174-4.

Liversedge made light work of Methley in their clash on Saturday, Craig Wood (5-8) and Nigel Doyle (4-30) ending the hosts’ innings on 76 before the visitors eased to 79-4.

It was a different story 24 hours later and home side Wakefield Thornes A repelled Graeme Winn (3-51) to put 226-5 onto the scoreboard.

Winn (47) and Mark Hydes (43) rallied Liversedge to 130-4 but they eventually succumbed on 174.
