Mirfield joy but Batley slip up

THE appetite for cricket was whetted after a rain delayed start with some telling individual performances with bat and ball in the Central Yorkshire League.

In Division Two Mirfield returned to the league with a 42 run victory over Townville A at Memorial Park. Naseer Saudager got them off to a good start top scoring with 33 in a total of 124.

Ajaml Zarif claimed 4-17 to dimiss Townvile A for 82.

In the Premier Division Hunslet Nelson secured an eight-wicket win at Birstall, Michael Lambert with 4-19 and Daniel McTernan 3-2 in 2.5 overs restricted the home side to 94 all out. Nelson eased to 97.2.

Batley made a losing return to the top flight as they went down to a three run defeat against Methley.

Muhammed Tahir (42) and no11 Raja Khan (31no) helped Batley to 117 but were undone by James Glynn’s haul of 6-30. Glynn made 34 as Methley reached 120. Batley will take heart from the 4-15 display by Naweed Ghany.

Mirfield Parish Cavaliers went down to a seven wicket defeat at champions Wrenthorpe.

Michael Padget made 25 for Parish but they had no answer to David Paynter who claimed 4-9. Wrenthorpe eased to 71-3 to seal the win.

In Division One Hopton Mills got the better of East Ardsley with a four wicket win. Batting first Ardsley set 141 with Nick Walker 36 and Jake Aleston 25 to the fore. Philip Scott did the damage for Mills with a haul of 5-24. Michael Carroll (38) and Samuel Gardiner (34) then steered Mills to victory.

Liversedge garnered a four wicket win at home to Methley A with Nigel Doyle taking 4-5 in 15 overs supported by Craig Wood (3-32) to dismiss Methley A for just 82. Liversedge reached their target for the loss of six wickets.

Scholes edged out Oulton with a one wicket win.

Moorlands batting was fluent as they posted a 90-run over Wakefield Thornes A. Alan Sumner led the way with 40, Michael Rounding added 30 and Joel Barnett 39. Stephen Lane 3-12 and Samuel Brynes 3-37 combined to reduce Thornes to 128.

In Division Two Birstall junior Alexander Drake took 5-31 to reduce Batley A to 132, Michael Kaye made 72 to steer Birstall to victory.

A haul of 6-13 for Martin Morley helped Gildersome reduce Ossett A to 137. Joe Bownass made 71 not out in Gildersome’s comfortable reply of 138-5.

Mirfield Parish A lost by five runs to Wrenthorpe A.

In Division Three Adwalton lost by five wickets against Hunslet Nelson A.

Gildersome A beat Moorlands A by 23 runs after Makbul Patel boosted Gildersome with a top score of 80.

Scholes A lost by seven wickets in their first match against Northowram Fields
