Look back at nation’s oldest cup competition

The Heavy Woollen Cup is England’s oldest club cricket competition and was first played for in 1883 when Heckmondwike defeated Dewsbury & Savile.

Hanging Heaton will be playing in their 22nd final on Sunday but their record is unfavourable having lost 14 and won seven.

Heaton’s first Heavy Woollen final came in 1899 when they lost to Heckmondwike.

They had to wait another 47 years for their next appearance when they defeated Ossett in 1946.

They suffered four cup final defeats between 1957 to 1960.

They last won the famous trophy in 2000, when they defeated Baildon at Liversedge, while Heaton’s last cup final appearance was in 2010 when they were beaten by a Wrenthorpe side captained by current batsman Gary Fellows.
