Liversedge strike late to sink Albion

Sedge had not won since defeating Maltby Main 4-2 way back on November 1 but they dug deep to start 2015 in some style.

The Clayborners had taken just one point from a possible 15 going into the match and were anxiously looking over their shoulders and the sides below them in the table.

Liversedge were under the cosh for much of the game but goalkeeper Sam Dodds was in inspirational form to deny the visitors on several occasions.

Albion created a host of chances as they dominated the first half but could find no way to beat Dodds and Liversedge were glad to go into the break on level terms.

Albion continued to dominate after the interval but again Dodds kept them at bay before Sedge struck twice late on to snatch all three points.

Tom Jackson nipped in at the far post to convert a Brook Newton corner and give his side the lead 12 minutes from full-time.

Albion pressed for an equaliser but a swift break by the home side saw Andy Wood fire home to secure a much needed victory.

Victory saw Liversedge move up to 15th place in the Premier Division table, nine points clear of second-bottom Glasshoughton.

They missed out on the chance to climb further when Tuesday’s home game with high flying Staveley was postponed.

Shaw Lane Aquaforce won their top-of-the-table clash with leaders Tadcaster Albion 1-0 on Tuesday and are now seven points behind the front runners with three games in hand, while Cleethorpes Town won 3-0 at Handsworth Parramore to move third.

Hunsworth slipped into the West Riding County Amateur Premier Division relegation zone following a 6-1 defeat at home to Steeton last Saturday.

The visitors led 2-0 at half-time and bagged another four goals after the break with Hunsworth’s consolation goal coming from Charles Taylor.

Overthope Sports Club’s Division One promotion hopes suffered a set back as they were hammered 7-0 at Bradford Horton Sports.

Littletown Reserves are second in Division Two as they earned the bragging rights with a 4-1 home success over Lower Hopton Reserves.

Joe Jagger bagged a brace for Littletown, who also had Ben McLean and Bradley Wild on target with Hopton replying through Liam Royal.
