Liversedge hand manager Rimmington perfect tonic

Liversedge have moved off the foot of the NCE League Premier Division table after taking four points from their two games at Clayborn in the space of four days this week.

Liversedge have boosted their survival hopes in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division by taking four points from two games at Clayborn.

Sedge moved off the foot of the table with a 3-1 win over Rainworth last Saturday and followed up with an impressive 1-1 draw against leaders Handsworth Parramore on Tuesday.

New signing Benny Igiehon gave Liversedge a 15th minute lead against Handsworth and although Simon Harrison equalised early in the second half, the home side held on for a welcome point.

Sedge had five players cry off with a bug against Rainworth, while manager Jonathan Rimmington opted to watch from the stands as he was also unwell.

Rimmington was handed the perfect tonic as he saw his Sedge side take control to move off the foot of the table.

The home side started well and Igiehon was denied by an excellent save from Rainworth goalkeeper Ben Townsend in the very first minute.

Igiehon had another chance soon after before Timmy Raheem’s wind assisted free-kick struck a post.

Liversedge had dominated the first half, with the wind at their backs, but were gifted an opening goal when Rainworth played a short goal kick, the defender slipped and Igiehon raced in and slotted home.

Raheem shot wide early in the second half following more indecision in the Rainworth defence .

Liversedge launched a quick counter attack upfield but Brandon Kane’s long range shot hit the crossbar.

Liversedge grabbed a second goal in the 71st minute when Raheem slotted a free-kick under the wall and beat Townsend at the near post.

Igiehon’s shot on the turn was agonisingly wide and when Rainworth launched the resulting goalkick downfield, Jordan Edridge broke to pull a goal back and set up a tense finale.

Sedge nerves were eased when another mistake in the Rainworth defence allowed Raheem to score and the home side almost added a fourth in the final minute but Kane’s effort was narrowly wide.

Liversedge Under-19s will entertain Nostell Miners Welfare in the Pat Rice Trophy semi-final on Monday (April 4) kick off 7.45pm.

The Sedge youngsters cruised into last four as they defeated Armthorpe 6-1 in last Thursday’s Northern Youth Alliance League Cup quarter-final.

Vaughan Redford opened the scoring after 14 minutes and added a second goal after the break.

Callum Barron, Arron Rogers and Cody Cromack added to the scoreline before Redford completed his hat-trick to seal victory.
